United Torah Judaism (UTJ) MK Yakov Cohen was slapped in the face by Attorney Amnon Dehartuch during a heated argument in the Knesset Tuesday.
"Even my father never hit me this way," said Cohen. "He gave me a slap the likes of which I've never received before. My world went dark. I call on the justice minister to dismiss him."
Dehartuch, The Justice Ministry's legal adviser in charge of the budget for ultra-Orthodox communities, was released with restrictions by police after the incident. The Knesset Presidency decided to ban Dehartuch from entering the Knesset and police barred him from having further contact with Cohen.
Apparently the two got into a heated debate over budget issues for religious sectors.
According to an account of the argument on the Jerusalem Post, Cohen told Dehartuch, "You are destroying the Torah world."
Dehartuch answered "You're an animal, shut your mouth," inciting Cohen to exclaim, "You are worse than the Germans, you want to destroy the body and also the soul."
Dehartuch then stated, "If you don't shut your mouth, I'll give you a slap," to which Cohen responded "Let's see then." Dehartuch then proceeded to slap the MK across the face.
Security guards then detained Dehartuch, and Cohen was taken to the Knesset infirmary.
According to one police official, "Security guards at the Knesset detained a man suspected of slapping the MK. A squad car was dispatched to the scene and the suspect was taken in for questioning," reported Ynetnews. |
