Border policeman Ahmed Hindawi was sentenced by the Haifa District Court to serve 16 and a half years in prison for raping and sodomizing a 70-year-old Holocaust victim last year.
Hindawi was also convicted of making threats and intent to cause harm due to a hit-and-run incident that happened before the rape.
According to the indictment, one year ago Hindawi committed a hit-and-run, where he hit a car and fled the scene. The car later caught up with him, wanting his name or insurance information. Instead, Hindawi showed them his Border Police ID, demanded they return to their car, and fired shots into the air with his M-16 assault rifle.
About an hour after this, the defendant was driving on a highway north of Haifa when he saw an elderly woman walking on the side of the road. Hindawi stopped his car and demanded the woman get in. When she refused, he pulled her off the road and dragged her behind some bushes. There he proceeded to rape her and sodomize her. Then, in order to humiliate the victim, he urinated on her. He left her there "wounded and battered all over her body," read the conviction.
Hindawi confessed soon after police began questioning him.
According to the judges ruling, Hindawi acted in a way that "can be classified under the most severe type of sexual crime. The defendant hunted a weak victim who was innocently walking by the road. A Holocaust survivor who, despite the atrocities she had experience, has managed to survive, rehabilitate her life and start a family, until all at once her world was destroyed, for the second time, while the defendant did unbearable things to her. Today the complainant is injured physically and mentally." |
