Kiryat Gat tries to prevent violence against town's girls from local Beduin men

The town of Kiryat Gat convened an emergency meeting on Sunday to begin a campaign to prevent its Jewish female teenagers from falling in love with local Beduin boys. Both communities are opposed the inter-ethnic coupling, agreeing that the cultural clash can sometimes end tragically.

One of the reasons behind the emergency conference was the 2006 murder of 16-year-old Mika Dabab, who was found burned near the Beduin community of Rahat. Dabab had been romantically involved with a young Rahat resident, and tried to end the relationship several days before she was murdered. The young man refused, kidnapped her from a night club and murdered her.

"We in the Beduin sector do not encourage romantic relations between Beduins and Jews as well. It hurts our families just like it hurts the Jews. It causes a lot of difficult problems and internal conflicts which often end in violence," Rahat Mayor Talal al-Krenawi said in answer to the Kiryat Gat conference.

However the mayor opposes the language used in Kiryat Gat's campaign.
