UN chief pledges to continue working for soldiers' release

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told reporters Monday that he would continue to work towards the release of kidnapped IDF soldiers Ehud Goldwasser, Eldad Regev and Gilad Shalit, but that the matter must be handled with discretion.

"Because of the sensitivity involving the safe return of the soldiers, I have not said much publicly. The less said publicly will be better for the situation," said Ki-moon, speaking at a rally at the United Nations building in New York calling for more UN action to release the Israeli soldiers.

Ki-moon stressed that he was continually working for the soldiers release, by way of a mediator in the case of the two soldiers captured by Hezbollah; and in the case of Gilad Shalit, he has called on Palestinian leaders for his release many times.

Ehud Goldwasser's mother, Miki, and his wife, Karnit, attended the rally, which was comprised of approximately 1,000 demonstrators. The protesters criticized the UN for failing to enforce Resolution 1701, which orders that the soldiers be released.
