response to the release of the state comptroller's report on the government's handling of the home front during the Second Lebanon War, the Mossawa Center called on the government Thursday to address the large gap between access to bomb shelters in Arab and Jewish communities.
Mossawa spokeswoman Hanan Hadad claimed that the report, which was released on Wednesday, showed that there was discrimination against the Arab sector in the area of bomb shelters. She referenced a 2003 survey sited in the report that found that most Israeli Arab authorities had no public bomb shelters.
The report concluded that there were no public shelters in Nazareth and Arabeh. According to the report, 153,000 Israeli Arabs have absolutely no access to protection. In Nazareth three-quarters of the population fall under this category. Ninety-nine percent of the population of Arabeh has no protection, and in the town of Yarca, it's 80 percent.
The report also found that the government allocated a drastically small amount on money to the protection of the Arab sector. Only 1.71 million of the total NIS 46 million for emergency services went to the Arab in 2006 and 2007.
"The budget gaps which discriminate against the Arab communities led to the loss of life during the war and what is needed now is immediate government action, not media spins. Because of these gaps and the lack of protection, 19 Arabs of Israel lost their lives and thousands were wounded," stated Mossawa. |
