Three sisters, aged 16 to 22, were murdered last weekend in the Gaza Strip, in what authorities believe to was an "honor killing." Hamas security forces said on Monday that they suspect the sisters' brother and cousin in the killings, and detained the men in prison.
The deaths of the women were the "honor killings" in Gaza since Hamas seized the area in June after routing loyalists of Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.
Witnesses said unidentified men dumped the bodies of the women in a pre-dug grave in a cemetery late on Saturday and informed Hamas's Executive Force. Medics said the sisters had multiple stab wounds.
The term "honor killing" refers to the murder, usually committed by family members, of women who are believed to have disgraced the family by getting raped, refusing an arranged marriage, or behaving too boldly in public.
Bringing the suspected men to trial in Gaza in the near future may prove difficult because courts there have stopped functioning since Hamas forcibly took over the Gaza Strip.
