The number of Israelis who received German citizenship jumped by 50 percent in 2006, German federal statisticians said on Monday according to Haaretz. According to the Federal Statistics Office in Germany, 4,313 of the 124,830 new German citizens who renounced their former citizenship were from Israel.
The overall number increased by 7 percent compared to 2005, rising for the first time since the sharp increase in 2000 following ammendments to citizenship laws for Jews outside holding other passports.
Germany has the fastest growing Jewish community in Europe, partly due to a policy that allows Jewish citizens from the former Soviet Union to apply for German citizenship.
