Abbas requests release of 100 more Fatah prisoners

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas requested Thursday that Jerusalem release an addition 100 Fatah prisoners currently serving in Israeli jails, reported Army Radio.

The prisoners are all former residents of the Gaza Strip, and could potentially serve as a bolstering force for Abbas in Gaza.

The release could also result in Hamas lessening its demands for the return of kidnapped IDF soldier Cpl. Gilad Shalit, a matter which Abbas claims is in Hamas' control and in which he himself has no influence.

Last week Israel released 255 Fatah prisoners with not directly involved in killing Israelis. According to the Jerusalem Post, the prisoners "signed a form in which they promised not to engage in terrorist activities following their release, and underwent a special identification process to confirm that they were, in fact, the same people who appeared on the release list."
