Six weeks after Hamas' violent takeover of the Gaza Strip, Palestinian Security Chief Mohammad Dahlan of Fatah resigned on Thursday.

Dahlan, 46-years-old cited medical reasons as grounds for his resignation, although it is believed that he left due to harsh criticism over his failure to prevent Hamas' coup in Gaza.

''Because of my long absence and health problems, I hope that you accept the end of my mission as a national security adviser. I will always remain a loyal soldier behind you,''
Dahlan wrote to Abbas, according to a statement.

However on June 19 Dahlan reportedly claimed responsibility for his mistakes and said that people, himself included, acknowledge their errors.
