Hamas gunmen killed two Palestinians Thursday in Gaza City as part of continued conflict between Hamas and the Islamic Jihad over firing weapons in public, which Hamas has banned.
According to the Islamic Jihad, Hamas ambushed its members Thursday morning by dragging them out of a mosque and firing at their legs.
During the incident, Nidal al-Daya was shot in the head, and Salah al-Amoudi, who happens to be a Fatah official, was shot and killed while he was leaving the mosque.
The Interior Ministry, run by Hamas, pledged to launch an investigation into the death of al-Amoudi.
"We are not going to hesitate with anyone violating the law and trying to sabotage the stability in Gaza. We are going to put an end to all the chaos and use of arms in our country," read a statement from the ministry.
Clashes between the two groups were ignited Tuesday when an Islamic Jihad operative fired his gun in the air in celebration at a wedding. On Wednesday, clashes left one Hamas operative dead, and six Islamic Jihad militants wounded. Hamas has pledged to rid Gaza's streets of violence, and has banned firing weapons in public.
According to the Associated Press, "The incident is an indication of growing animosity between the two extremist Islamic groups, now that their common enemy, the moderate Fatah of Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, has been vanquished in the Gaza Strip." |
