In accordance with recent Israeli-PA agreements, a senior Palestinian security official reported Sunday that more than 300 Fatah militants relinquished their guns as part of an amnesty deal with Israel.
The official said that all but three Al Aksa members on the amnesty list have surrendered their weapons and renounced terrorism. The Fatah-affiliated militia was created at the eruption of the second Intifada in 2000, and has carried out dozens of terrorist attacks against Israelis.
Fatah's official stance is that it recognizes Israel and endorses a two-state solution.
Its rival group Hamas, which overthrew Fatah from the Gaza Strip June, refuses to recognize Israel and calls for the destruction of Israel. Fatah has cracked down on Hamas militants in the West Bank, arresting 400 of them.
However the chances of Fatah's success in establishing its authority in the West Bank and not reuining with Hamas have many regional experts worried.
