After a nearly two-month standstill following Hamas' takeover of Gaza, Israel and Hamas have restarted negotiations to release the captured Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit. Egypt is mediating the renewed talks, which started about a week ago, a senior political official in Jerusalem said yesterday.
Israel's decision on whether to release more Fatah prisoners, as requested by PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, partially depends on Hamas' reaction. The Olmert administration fears setting back negotiations Shalit.
"It depends on contacts regarding the completion of the Shalit deal, via the Egyptians, not being damaged as a result of the issue," Olmert said.
