An influential Hungarian right-wing extremist group, known for its antisemitism, announced plans for its own militia, an prospect that has many Jews concerned.
Mazsihisz (The Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities) said the uniforms for the proposed "Hungarian Guard" are strikingly close to what the fascists wore in the 1940s.
"Mazsihisz (The Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities) is at a loss to explain the recent creation of this armed body," Mazsihisz said in a statement.
The party, Jobbik, on Friday said it was creating the Guard because Hungary is currently devoid of any "physical, mental or spiritual self-defense".
Mazsihisz said it hoped Hungary's government would find a constitutional way to ban this and similar groups to "guarantee a peaceful life for Hungarian Jewry and every Hungarian resident," Haaretz reported.
