The Japanese foreign minister will meet with the foreign ministers of Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority Wednesday in Jericho to discuss the launch of a new joint project aimed at helping the PA. Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso is also expected to announce Japan's renewed financial aid to the PA.
The Japanese Foreign Ministry has described this joint economic project, called the "corridor for peace and prosperity," as a way to create economic development for a Palestinian state "through the strengthening of their partnership with neighboring countries, especially Israel and Jordan."
With the project, originally discussed in Jordan in June, Japan wishes to increase regional cooperation and economic opportunities by creating an agricultural/industrial park in the Jordan Valley to produce products that will then be sent to a "distribution center" in Jordan, from where the products with be distributed regionally and abroad.
Aso, while visiting Israel for the first time, is set to meet President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni.
Aso, who will arrive to the region Monday, will also announce Japan's reinstatement of financial aid to PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas' government. Haaretz reported that, according to top diplomats, Japan will not only renew financial assistance, but will also give $20 million of emergency aid to Abbas' government.
Over the past two years, Israel and Japan have increased foreign relations, with many important political figures from each country paying visits to the other. |
