While operating in the northern Gaza Strip Tuesday, the IDF, with the help of Military Intelligence, discovered a tunnel approximately 765 yards from Israel's border.
Sources within Military Intelligence believe the tunnel was meant to be used for a large-scale terror attack to be carried out on an Israeli town north of Gaza.
The unearthing of the tunnel was revealed Wednesday when a gag order was lifted.
The IDF intends to destroy the tunnel with explosives. The tunnel, which was not yet finished, was hidden beneath tomato greenhouses, and a generator thought to be used to power digging equipment was found nearby.
It is suspected that Gaza holds many such tunnels, which are used for smuggling weapons and illegal goods, and for infiltrating Israel to perform terror attacks.
"It's not unreasonable to think that more of these kinds of tunnels exist, and that terrorists are just waiting for the day when they receive the order to use them," the Jerusalem Post quoted one IDF official as saying. |
