The public received more reassurances from top defense officials Sunday that Syria and Hezbollah are not planning a war against Israel, according to the Jerusalem Post.
Israeli officials have been meeting with alarming frequency to discuss the situation on the border with Syria, which has reportedly begun to receive large shipments of highly sophisticated weaponry from Russia.
Russian military officials reportedly agreed the arms deal with Syria only after Syria pledged not to resell or redistribute the weaponry to another country, namely Lebanon and Iran.
However a respected defense publication, Janes Defense Weekly, alleged that Syria agreed in May to transfer ten Russian-made anti-aircraft missile and gun range land-based Pantsyr-S1E defense systems to Iran.
In the past, Israel has also accused Russia of selling weapons to Hezbollah, a terrorist group that frequently vows destroy Israel.
Vitaly Shlykov, a member of Russia's Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, dismissed the Israeli claims as "silly rumors."
Alexander Rybas, a top official of KBP Instrument Design Bureau, said that "Hizbullah has not and would not have been able to own [Russian-made systems]."
