With the help of local Beduins, Egyptian security forces uncovered Sunday 1,100 pounds of explosives hidden in northern Sinai, 15 miles from the Rafah border crossing into Gaza.
According to one official, the Beduins, who had been working in conjunction with authorities, tipped off security forces as to the location of the TNT, and led them to the site, where the explosives were found hidden in sacks and concealed by bushes.
Since October 2004, 125 people were killed in three major suicide bombing attacks carried out by Islamic militants on the Sinai resorts of Sharm el-Sheik, Taba and Dahab.
The smuggling of weapons, goods, illegal contraband and foreigners into both Israel and Gaza, often by way of tunnels, has caused Israel to frequently accuse Egypt of not doing enough to increase security on its borders.
Some Beduins make a living aiding such smuggling.
Egypt has said it has stepped up counter-smuggling activity. |
