After ceasing its financing of fuel deliveries to Gaza, the European Union said Monday that it would resume payment only when Hamas pledges not to tax electricity bills, an announcement that featured prominently in Monday's papers.
Power was cut in areas of the Gaza Strip on Thursday following the EU's decision to halt funding because of security concerns at one of the crossings, according to the Jerusalem Post. Some 600,000 homes were left without power.
"We've also [been led to believe] that Hamas plans to introduce taxes on electricity bills in the Gaza strip. ... this would not allow us to continue paying for fuel," EU spokeswoman Antonia Mochan said.
"We're ready to resume payments within hours once we have assurances that these taxes will not be introduced," the spokeswoman continued.
