Hospitals in Israel's north remain unfortified due to lack of government funding and responsibility, charged the director of the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, Rafi Beyar, during a special meeting Monday addressing the recent state comptroller report on Israel's management of the home front during the Second Lebanon War.
According to Beyar, the government is "shirking its national responsibility to ensure the safety of the residents of the north by not transferring funds for fortifying the hospital."
"The government has not transferred even one agora for the fortification. We are being thrown to the donors," Beyar told Ynetnews, referring to the Israeli coin equaling about a quarter of a penny.
Chairman of the Knesset's State Control Committee MK Zevulun Orlev also expressed concern, saying during the meeting that "Israel's health system is not ready for the next war."
In his July report, State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss found that only two hospitals in northern Israel were adequately fortified, and that the fortification of hospitals should be a top concern.
The report also found that approximately 200 northern ambulances weren't equipped for chemical warfare. |
