Big changes may await Fatah's agenda in the West Bank. The party's legislator Muhammad Dahlan returned to Ramallah on Monday following six weeks of medical treatment abroad, and is expected to launch reforms to Fatah's platform before the PA's parliamentary and presidential elections, according to the Jerusalem Post.
Some party activists speculate that Dahlan may even challenge the leadership of PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.
Abbas and Fatah officials are facing increasing pressure to introduce major reforms following Hamas's putsch in the Gaza Strip. Estranged Fatah leader Farouk Kaddoumi accused Abbas and his senior aides of serving the interests of Israel.
"They are trying to preserve their interests with the occupation," he said. "In the absence of accountability and supervision, many of the leaders have filled their pockets with public funds. Abbas made a mistake by opposing the militarization of the intifada. Ever since the signing of the Oslo Accords he has been calling for an end to the armed resistance."
