Amid public condemnations of government inaction, Education Minister Yuli Tamir on Friday announced that the government would provide funding to protect schools in the city located right off the Gaza Strip, Haaretz reported. Sderot and neighboring communities are hit daily by Qassam rockets that Hamas militants launch from the Gaza.
"The parents' demands will be met, and the school year will begin as expected. The process of fortifying schools is not a simple one, and it will take a long time to work out" Tamir stated.
The parents threatened to withdraw their children from school if the government did not progress in reinforcing schools against rockets by the start of the school year. The project could delay the start of the school year, although Tamir said that the children?s studies would not be postponed.
