As IDF soldier Cpl. Gilad Shalit spends his 21st birthday in captivity -- his second since being kidnapped by Hamas on June 25, 2006, his father, Noam Shalit, expressed his disappointment in efforts to release his son.
"I no longer see a light at the end of the tunnel. These days, there are no negotiations, no contact with the Palestinians, absolutely no contact between the Israeli government and Gilad's kidnappers," Ynetnews reported Shalit as saying.
Shalit had tried to have a birthday message for his son published in a Palestinian newspaper controlled by Hamas, but he was denied, he told Army Radio.
Shalit also expressed pessimism in response to Hamas' recent proposal to trade a videotape of the captured soldier for the release of female and lesser Palestinian prisoners.
"The people who offer these things are not the people who are holding Gilad. These are media manipulations," he said in an interview with Army Radio.
In response to comments made by exiled Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal on CNN Monday, Shalit stated, "after 429 days in captivity, and nonstop hoping and talking [sic] Gilad is still hopelessly held by Hamas. Unfortunately there are circumlocutions on the subject but no real negotiations."
Despite the failed efforts to release his son, Shalit stated, "We are not forgetting even for a minute." |
