Mohammed Salum died Wednesday of critical wounds he received when a Katyusha rocket hit his Haifa home during last summer's Second Lebanon War.

Salum, 41, was severely burned when a Katyusha fired by Hezbollah struck his family's home in the largely Arab neighborhood of Wadi Nisnas in Haifa. Salum was evacuated to a nearby hospital, where he remained in the intensive care unit until his passing yesterday.

Salum's death brings the total number of the war's Israeli casualties to 153, according to Haaretz.

"There were weeks when we felt that his condition may be improving and he was beginning to recover," said Salum's sister, Munira, who has remained by his bedside. "My mother and I thought that he was coming back to us and we even made sure to modify the house in order to cater to his needs, removing staircases and enabling wheelchair access, but over the last week his condition worsened and we slowly felt that we were losing him,"

Munira harshly criticized the state for its delay in giving compensation, and its general mishandling of the situation.

"We still haven't received authorization for a new house, or compensation for the house that was destroyed," said Munira. "We are renting now, and every month we begin the process of obtaining authorization for compensation all over again, as if we are responsible for what happened. Now we are left without a brother and without a home."

Salum was survived by his mother, his sister, Munira, and three brothers.
