Acting in collaboration with the Israeli-based organization Save a Child's Heart (SACH), three Israeli doctors on Tuesday screened 40 children from Iraq who are suffering from heart disease. The doctors say they hope their work can accomplish what diplomacy has not been able to achieve, Haaretz reported.
"Our only previous exchanges with the Iraqis are the Scud missiles," said Dr. Sion Houri, director of the pediatric intensive care unit at Wolfson Medical Center in Holon where the children are treated. Houri was referring to the missiles Iraq fired at Israel during the 1991 Gulf War.
"But the Iraqis we met here have been very receptive and cooperative, which makes me believe that the animosity and war aren't between the people", he said
"Israel is a good country. It's a country that has mercy on other people," said Suzanne, the mother of a four-year-old boy, Mustafa, whom Houri is treating. Suzanne is a Kurd from Iraq, and said she fears retribution for her interaction with Israelis upon her return home.
SACH is a humanitarian organization that provides pediatric care to children from the third world.
