Capt. Moshe Taranto z'l explores a tunnel in Rafiah (IDF)

At the end of a lengthy combat service in the Engineering Corps, in the middle of his pre-release holiday, their son announced his decision to go back to the army, to the Gaza Strip, to take the place of a childhood friend who was killed.

He didn't say much more than that. Everyone in the family knew the friend: Captain Aviv Hakani, the commander of the tunnel team in the Gaza Strip, who was killed this May along with four other soldiers when an armored personnel carrier blew up along the Philadelphi Route. This week, very close to this same route, the friend and replacement officer, Captain Moshe Taranto, was killed in an operation to destroy an underground tunnel. Yair Ettinger reports.
