Israeli troops killed the deputy commander of the Al-Aksa Martyrs' Brigades terror group Saturday when they demolished the Jenin home he was hiding in, burying him.
Egoz and Nahal troops killed Palestinian fugitive Taher Abu Kamal, deputy to Jenin leader of the Fatah Al-Aksa Martyrs' Brigades, Zakariyah Zubeidi.
The Israeli troops surrounded a Jenin building and called on the inhabitants to leave, the army said.
From inside the house, Abu Kamal opened fire on the troops, starting a firefight which lasted for hours.
Soldiers lay siege for hours, repeatedly calling on the fugitive, Taher Abu Kamal, 30, to surrender. All the residents left the house except for the fugitive.
Eventually anti-tank missiles were fired at the four-story house, causing damage to the structure and, eventually, its collapse.
After the battle, soldiers discovered Abu Kamal's body inside the ruins of the house.
Palestinians removed the body later Saturday.
Abu Kamal is the second of Zubeidi's deputies who have been eliminated by IDF action this year.
In September, an IAF helicopter fired at a car carrying Mahmoud Abu Khalifa, killing him and two additional terrorist fugitives.
The AP contributed to this report. |
