An Israeli aircraft aimed a missile Tuesday at a car carrying Palestinian terrorists who had fired mortar shells at Jewish settlements, the army said. The passengers escaped unharmed.
The missile struck the car near the town of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. The army said the car was carrying militants who had fired some 40 mortar shells this week alone.
Earlier this month, Israeli aircraft had fired missiles in the Khan Younis area, wounding Jamal Abu Samhadaneh, a top militant.
Israeli officials said after the Nov. 11 death of Yasser Arafat that they would largely hold off on targeted killings of wanted Palestinian terrorists, to enable the new Palestinian leadership to try to negotiate a cease-fire with the armed groups. Since the outbreak of Israeli-Palestinian fighting in 2000, Israel has killed scores of fugitives in targeted killings.
Israel has said it would reserve the right to target terrorists about to carry out attacks.
The AP contributed to this report. |
