U.S.-born lawyer, who defended accused judge killer, dies in apparent suicide
By: Associated Press

David Weiner, an American-born Israeli lawyer, died Sunday reportedly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Israeli media reported that he was despondent over defending an underworld figure later implicated in the killing of a judge.

David Weiner, 46, the deputy state public defender, reportedly shot himself in the head on Friday at his Tel Aviv home, the Haaretz daily reported. He left a suicide note citing the reason as his legal involvement with Yitzhak Zuziashvili, a prime suspect in the killing of Tel Aviv District Court Judge Adi Azar.

Weiner was born in New York City, media reports said, and studied law at Tel Aviv University.

Azar was killed last July 19 outside his home. Afterward, Zuziashvili approached Weiner, offering information about the murder in exchange for speeding up his appeal on another murder conviction. Weiner did not suspect that Zuziashvili was involved in the judge's killing.

In November, police arrested five people in connection with the killing of the judge and charged that Zuziashvili was behind it, trying to use the killing to bargain for a better deal in court.

Yoav Sapir, a colleague of Weiner, told Haaretz that the case affected him deeply. Weiner "lived with the feeling of having been duped, and that somebody might think he acted wrongly."
