DebkaFile reports that Rabbi Elyashiv, spiritual leader of the ultra-religious United Torah bloc, has placed a substantial roadblock in the path of Sharon?s disengagement plan for Gaza and northern Samaria.
He directed 6 Torah Judaism Knesset Members to support the Likud rebels' demand for a referendum before passage of any legislation to expel Israelis from their homes. Prime Minister Sharon strongly opposes any referendum. MK Ravitz of Torah Judaism responded Monday by resigning from government coalition.
Rabbi?s ruling is also expected to constrain the 11-member Shas faction, thus denying the ruling Likud-Labor coalition (49) a parliamentary majority for passing evacuation-compensation law essential for realizing the retreat plan.
