Pro-disengagement ministers confuse "violence" with verbal protest
By: IMRA

Efforts to properly address the threat of the use of violence by some disengagement opponents have been crippled by a tendency of disengagement supporters to try to exploit the legitimate need to address violence and threats of violence to silence opposition.

This was best illustrated by Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer's remarks today. Ben-Eliezer referred to the act of protest of yelling "shame" at Minister Limor Livnat, written slogans that "Rabin is waiting for Arik Sharon" (e.g. a veiled death threat) and actual apparently explicit death threats in the same breath when speaking on Israel Radio today and calling for
administrative detention.

Last Thursday Prime Minister Sharon condemned "threats" against Likud MKs and ministers - giving the same weight to "threats" by constituents that they won't support the re-election of those who support disengagement and threats of physical harm.

This confusion not only means diverting limited resources from true threats but also reducing the perceived severity of true threats since they are given the same apparent weight as legitimate expression.
