IDF to double-fence Gaza to keep out anti-expulsion protesters

Israel Radio reported that the IDF is to begin work within weeks on a second "security fence" separating the Jewish state from the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli Defense Ministry is appointing contractors this week to proceed with the construction.

The second fence, to be built on Israeli territory, is set to enclose an area of about 70 meters (230 feet) wide to create a sterile "buffer zone" equipped with unmanned vehicles, security cameras and sensors.

The zone is intended to prevent anti-expulsion protesters from arriving, and expelled residents from later trying to return.

The second barrier is to be completed before Israel begins its planned expulsion of about 8,000 Jewish settlers around July 20.
