A Palestinian sniper on Tuesday shot and seriously wounded an Israeli in the Gaza Strip settlement of Morag, military officials and rescue workers said.
A group of workers were working on a fence surrounding the settlement. IDF soldiers were deployed between the workers and the first row of Palestinian houses in the Arab city of Rafiah, less than fifty meters away.
IDF forces returned fire, but could not stop the sniper. Magen David Adom workers gave first aid at the scene, and the victim was flown by military helicopter to Soroka Hospital in Beer Sheva.
His condition is listed as moderate-to-serious. His life is not believed to be in danger.
A preliminary inquiry showed the worker was not wearing a bulletproof vest, despite official regulations requiring contractors to provide safety equipment for their workers.
The Palestinian Popular Resistance Committee claimed credit for the attack. Group spokesman Abu Avir told Ynet the attack was in response to Israeli violations of the cease-fire, ynet reported.
"We will continue our activities until it becomes clear that Palestinian blood is no different and no cheaper than Israeli blood, and until all Palestinian demands for a cease fire, including the release of prisoners, has been met," he said.
In other news, Palestinian Minister for Civil Affairs Mohammed Dahlan met Tuesday with the Israeli government?s operations coordinator in the territories to discuss the easing of travel restrictions on Palestinian civilians.
It is not clear whether shooting restrictions would be eased as well, or whether they are already considered easy enough. |
