According to White House spokesman Scott McClellan, the U.S. Administration is not concerned by the postponement of the disengagement by three weeks. On the contrary, he said, "It's an Israeli internal issue."
Israel's retreat will likely be delayed from late July to mid-August.
The Israeli government is likely to approve Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz' suggestion to push the withdrawal from all 21 Gaza settlements and four in the West Bank back from July 25 to August 15.
"The evacuation order signed by Sharon and Mofaz, in accordance with the government's decision, stipulates that from July 20, Israeli citizens cannot remain in the Gaza Strip and northern Samaria. Whoever remains there after that date will be breaking the law, and there's no change in that, but the enforcement will be postponed. Previously, police were to come on July 25 to ascertain whether the law was being implemented, and now they will come on August 15," a source said.
The new schedule would see the evacuation of settlements completed toward mid-September. IDF troops would remain there for several more weeks. For now, the defense establishment has not changed the deadline for completing the evacuation -- September 30, three days before Rosh Hashanah.
