The IDF, IAF, and Border Police are stepping up their presence in the vicinity of the Egyptian border, as part of a bid to deal more effectively with arms smuggling from Sinai into the territories.
According to a senior military source, the IDF is having a tough time dealing with the smuggling in the area, estimating that huge quantities of arms are being channeled from Sinai into the West Bank. Each time an arms shipment has been caught, the quantities have been very large, sometimes up to dozens of Kalashnikov assault rifles.
They're not only bringing in assault rifles, but also anti-tank rockets, anti-aircraft missiles, military-grade explosives and materials to manufacture Qassam rockets.
The deployment of the troops from the special units comes as part of an extensive operational and intelligence effort related to the disengagement plan, since IDF officials have identified a Palestinian attempt to boost smuggling to the West Bank on the occaision of Israel's withdrawal.
