Haifa U: "not a little outraged" by Brit boycott

The University of Haifa's official response to the Association of Univeristy Teachers (AUT) boycott reads, "[We are] saddened and not a little outraged by the utterly unjust and unjustifiable decision of the AUT".

It goes on to say, "The case against Israeli academia in general, and the University of Haifa in particular, is devoid of empirical evidence and violates the principle of due process. Driven by a prior and prejudicial assumption of guilt, the AUT has refused to confuse itself with facts."

The response goes on to deny the Committee's claim that the University expelled Dr. Pappe (the Haifa U. professor who recommended the boycott to the AUT) saying "Dr. Pappe has transgressed all common ethical standards of academic life. Yet, despite his conduct, the university made no attempt to expel him."

As to the "now too famous" disqualified MA thesis by student Teddy Katz, the report said it was was disqualified due to the illegitimacy of its content, as was ruling of an independent academic committee.

"The University of Haifa is proud of its record of Arab-Jewish cooperation and reconciliation, it concluded with the fact that 20% of the university's student body are Arab citizens of the State of Israel. "We call upon the academic community throughout the free world to reject this politically motivated abuse of academic discourse."

In related news, the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation (IRWF) today offered its support to the Israeli academic system in general, and to the universities of Haifa and Bar Illan in particular. "As an institution that promotes the values of peace, brotherhood and individual freedom, the IRWF calls on all fair-minded people to identify themselves with the Israeli universities of Haifa and Bar Illan and to support the values of free speech and academic freedom, which have been so sadly ignored by the AUT in its discriminatory decision."
