According to security officials, the Israel Defense Forces have proposed to build a separation fence to divide Israeli and Palestinian-controlled sections of the West Bank city of Hebron.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject, said the military has presented its plan for the fence to Attorney General Menachem Mazuz for a ruling.

Like the separation barrier along the Green Line border, the fence in Hebron would serve the purpose of keeping terrorist bombers and other attackers out of Israel.

About 500 Jews live in three downtown compounds amid 162,000 Palestinians. However, about 30,000 Palestinians live in the Israeli-controlled zone, and it is unclear how the military plans to accommodate them if the fence is built.
