Palestinian anti-fence protest near Ramallah gets out of hand

Hundreds of Palestinians gathered at a closed military zone near Ramallah to protest against the construction of a section of the security fence; several -- among them MK Mohammed Barakeh (Hadash) -- were injured when the protest turned violent.

Barakeh was lightly hurt by a stun grenade thrown by police officers at a demonstration attended by hundreds of Palestinians, adjacent to the West Bank village of Bil'in, east of Modi'in.

Demonstrators claims that the protest was calm, and that the security forces initiated the violence. But according to the IDF, the area in which the protest was held had been declared a closed military zone. Police officers and IDF soldiers at the site had to fire rubber bullets and spray tear gas in order to keep the violent crowd under control.

Bil'in, which is located north of the Jerusalem Modi'in highway, has been the site of daily demonstrations against the security fence by Palestinians and Israeli leftists.

Among the demonstrators were MK Abdulmalik Dehamshe (United Arab List), members of Ta'ayush, Anarchists Against the Fence, and additional organizations.

Some 700-odd Palestinians also took part in the protest, headed by Palestinian public officials including former minister Kedura Fares and former candidate for Palestinian Authority chairman Mustafa Barghouti.
