Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi pledged to offer a US$100 million aid package to the Palestinian Authority after meeting with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas in Tokyo.
During the press conference, Koizumi said the parties are faced with what he called "a historic opportunity to advance the peace process.
"Abu Mazen (Abbas) told me he is determined to introduce security and political reforms," the Japanese leader said.
Meanwhile, Abbas thanked the Japanese for their support and noted he is planning to set up a security establishment subjected to one law and one authority. He also took the opportunity to further his own political agenda by insisting, "the Israelis must suspend the building of the fence, as well as West Bank construction."
On another front, Abbas said Hamas has accepted the upcoming Palestinian elections and will field candidates in the poll. "This is necessary for implementation of pluralism," he said. "Hamas is not a threat for us."
