Two environmental groups petitioned the High Court of Justice on Sunday against the plan to relocate evacuated Gaza settlers to the sands of Nitzanim, calling it a "historic mistake."
The petitioners -- Israel Union for Environmental Defense (known in Hebrew as Adam Teva V'Din), and Life and Environment -- are asking for an interim injunction that would freeze any construction work in the area.
"Irrespective of any political stance regarding the disengagement plan, we think moving the evacuees specifically to this special region is a historic mistake," the groups said in their petition.
Interior Minister Ophir Pines-Paz on Sunday declared an 8,000-dunam area in Nitzanim a nature reserve in an attempt to minimize any environmental damage caused by relocating the Gaza settlers.
