With a much smaller budget than the United States, Canada is unlikely to match the $50 million that U.S. President George W. Bush pledged Thursday in housing aide for the Palestinians to settle in Gaza once Israelis leave in August.
Still, Canada should announce a "substantial investment" when Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas meets Prime Minister Paul Martin during a brief visit to the federal capital today, said Hussein Amery, president of the National Council on Canada-Arab Relations, a group that promotes Arab interests.
"Nobody is going to take us seriously until we make a substantial investment," Amery said.
Senior government officials said Prime Minister Paul Martin would pledge his commitment to Abbas to help the Palestinian Authority establish a democratic government, build infrastructure and housing, and further help in developing a Palestinian judicial system.
