The PA has suspended plans to execute two dozen Palestinians convicted of collaborating with Israel, fearing that putting the inmates to death would inflame tensions with Israel, a Palestinian cabinet minister said Monday.
Sufyan Abu Zaydeh, the Palestinian minister in charge of prisoner affairs, said the fate of the collaborators was raised by Israeli negotiators during a recent meeting.
"We are not going to carry out death penalties now, under these circumstances," Abu Zaydeh said.
About half of the 51 Palestinians on death row are alleged informers for Israel. The remainder have been convicted of murder and other violent crimes.
Dozens of Palestinians suspected of collaborating with Israel have been killed by fellow Palestinians. Such vigilante killings, often carried out in public squares, are rarely condemned in Palestinian society.
