The first international Special Operations Forces Week started on Wednesday, and convened at the Tampa Convention Center with 1,000 invited participants, including military leaders from the U.S. and many other nations, along with representatives of 400 companies who supply equipment to the military, officials said.
Among those attending are representatives from Iraq, Israel, Pakistan, Canada, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, the Philippines, Russia, Pakistan and Sweden.
Vice President Dick Cheney is to address the group Friday.
Special Operations Command chief Gen. Bryan D. Brown said Wednesday he hoped the conference would strengthen acquaintances and build new friendships, foster cooperation and joint training, and build the trust that is necessary to defeat global threats.
"Rejecting terror and tyranny is not associated with a particular culture," Brown said. "Belief in human dignity is not restricted by politics or geography, these are basic human values that as civilized nations, we all share and seek to defend."
The U.S. Special Operations Command is headquartered at Tampa's MacDill Air Force Base.
The base is also home to the U.S. Central Command, which directs the war in Iraq.
