The visit could help ease tensions between the two countries.

The Israeli leader last visited France in July 2001, a few months after the start of the violence.

The French government had invited Sharon to visit Paris in August, but the Israeli prime minister asked to push forward the meeting to July, ahead of the planned Israeli pullout from the Gaza Strip.
