Israeli President Moshe Katsav arrived in Spain Monday on a visit to mark 20 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Katsav is to visit three Spanish cities and meet with King Juan Carlos and Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.
Katsav, accompanied by his wife, Guila, arrived shortly before 10:30 a.m. (0830 GMT) and was received with military honors at Madrid's Barajas international airport by Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, a former European Union envoy in the Middle East.
Later Monday, he was scheduled to have lunch with King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia and travel to Toledo -- a city where Jews, Christians and Muslims lived together some 500 years ago.
During his four-day visit, he will also receive a medal at Madrid's city hall, meet with Zapatero and travel to the southern city of Cordoba, another historical venue where Jews, Muslims and Christians once lived in harmony.
Israel and Spain established diplomatic relations in 1986 with a joint Spanish-Israeli statement issued in the Dutch capital, The Hague.
