The states of Michigan and Nebraska proclaimed October 5th as Raoul Wallenberg Day, following a campaign launched by the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation. This date is commemorated every year in the State of New York and was observed in Minnesota and Philadelphia in previous years.

On October 5th 1981, Raoul Wallenberg became the second person in history to be awarded Honorary U.S. Citizenship.

Wallenberg is the Swedish diplomat who saved tens of thousands of Jews in Hungary during WWII. In 1945 he was taken by the Soviet army, never to be seen again.
