Israeli aircraft drops leaflets on Lebanon denouncing Hizbullah

An Israeli aircraft dropped leaflets in southern Lebanon neighborhoods and in Beirut early Thursday, calling on the Lebanese government to take control of its border area with Israel and to prevent the terrorist Hizbullah group from causing a "dangerous military escalation" of the tense situation there.

The air drop occurred a day after Hizbullah guerrillas attacked Israeli positions in the south, killing an Israeli soldier and wounding three others.

Lebanese Foreign Minister Mahmoud Hammoud said the air drop itself was a violation of Lebanon's sovereignty and blamed Israel for the "escalation" in the south of the country.

"The foreign ministry has informed the U.N. Security Council of the aggressions that took place. We consider that the dropping by Israel of leaflets is a violation of Lebanese sovereignty and the safety of its land and skies," Hammoud said in a statement.

Lebanese army troops collected sackfuls of the leaflets that covered streets and rooftops in three neighborhoods close to Beirut's international airport, said security officials, who, according to protocol, cannot be named.

Leaflets were also dropped in Sidon, on the Mediterranean coast 45 kilometers, (27 miles), south of Beirut, and elsewhere in the south, officials said.

Israeli security officials speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed the airdrop, but there was no immediate comment from Hizbullah.
