Concerned citizens, outraged by the flagrant violation of three young girls' basic rights by Israeli police and courts, will demonstrate at the Jerusalem Supreme Court building on Thursday morning at 10 a.m.
Chaya Belogorodsky, age 14, Moriah Goldberg, age 13, and Pnina Ashkenazi, age 16, have been remanded by the police since June 29 on the weakest of charges, in connection with their participation in anti-disengagement protests. The Supreme Court has refused to even release the girls on house arrest and they are to remain in jail indefinitely, until the end of legal proceedings against them. The court's justification: the girls are "ideologically motivated," thereby presenting a greater danger to society than the average adult rapist, murderer or drug dealer, all of whom are routinely released pending subsequent proceedings.
The politically-motivated jailing of minors has been widely condemned by law professors, civil rights leaders and Knesset members to no avail. Basic civil rights are being trampled under the current administration for purely political reasons.
There will be a civil rights protest demanding the girls' immediate release this Thursday morning, August 4th, at 10:00 a.m. at the Supreme Court in Jerusalem, with the endorsement of Knesset members and civil rights leaders from right and left of the political spectrum. |
