Evacuating Gaza settlements was particularly difficult for one of Israel's top generals: his son, daughter-in law and grandson are settlers refusing to leave their homes.

On Thursday morning, Maj. Gen. Iftah Ron-Tal was in the Kfar Darom settlement, a militant stronghold, where as head of land forces he was overseeing the evacuation of hundreds of settlers.

His son Omri, meanwhile, was sitting with his family in a home in the nearby settlement of Shirat Hayam, a Mediterranean beachside outpost.

"I love my son, his family, his wife, his son, who is my grandson," Ron-Tal told Israel TV's Channel Two. "I think the pain here is not just personal pain, it's general pain. We're carrying out the most correct mission and in the best way that we know how."

"I feel that everyone is my son," Ron-Tal said. "We are all from the same side in Israel."

Ron-Tal added that "I'm sure that when he has to leave his home, he will leave his home."

The general's son, Omri, refused to speak with the press.
