The Chief Sephardi and Ashkenazi rabbis, Shlomo Amar and Yona Metzger, attended the Cabinet meeting on Sunday to plead their last-minute case for not destroying the abandoned Gaza synagogues. Government officials claim that the plea is politically motivated.
The High Supreme Court of Justice had ruled that it was acceptable for the IDF to raze the synagogues, to prevent their desecration by Palestinians. The IDF's Chief Rabbi, Yisrael Weiss, backs the decision, saying that there is a real danger that the synagogues will be vandalized and possibly turned into mosques.
At the last minute, the Court allowed a reprieve to consider appeals on the synagogue destruction.
