On Thursday, right-wing activists were suspected of placing signs in the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial's "valley of destroyed communities." Signs said, "In memory of the 25 Jewish communities destroyed by the tyrant Ariel Sharon." Yad Vashem officials removed the signs.
Activists against the Gaza withdrawal have used Holocaust imagery throughout their protests. During the evacuation, children wore orange Stars of David, and compared IDF troops to Nazi soldiers "just following orders". Some politicians have strongly objected to outcries against the "cheapening of the Holocaust." Some survivors and their families have argued against comparisons, but supporters of the evacuees, including Holocaust survivors, say that Israel is making an example to other countries that it's okay to throw Jews out of their homes "for the greater good."
The Yad Vashem management filed an official police complaint and asked Israelis to "refrain from using expressions and terms from the Holocaust in this political debate."
